COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: BARNARD & TEACHERS COLLEGE
Founded in 1889, Barnard carries a reputation as the most selective four-year women’s college in the United States. At the time of its founding, it was the only college in the city and one of few in the nation where women could receive the same standard of education as men. Barnard’s campus is located across Broadway from Columbia’s Morningside campus.
Teacher's College, a professional school designed to impart teachers with innovative educational techniques for schooling the poor children of New York City, was founded in 1887. Its multiple buildings, located on 120th Street just north of Columbia’s main campus, create a labyrinth unsuspecting students try their best to navigate. Though the buildings have all been combined into one, their floors are not level; for instance, you can walk a straight line on the second floor corridor of one building and end up on the fourth floor of another.
Both institutions are official colleges of Columbia University, each retaining their financial and administrative independence.
