COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: COLLEGE WALK
College Walk is the promenade that bisects Columbia’s main campus. Originally a bustling street, it was closed down to traffic in 1953 in anticipation of the University's 200th Anniversary. The ornamental gates at either end were installed in 1967.
College Walk becomes a place of ethereal beauty during the holiday season when the trees lining it are lit with white lights in ceremonial fashion by the president of the university. The inaugural ceremony was held in early December 1998, and has happened every year ever since. The trees light the promenade until the end of February.
