COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: EAST CAMPUS
During the 1960s Columbia University expanded eastward between 116th & 118th streets and Amsterdam Avenue & Morningside Drive, creating what collectively became known as East Campus. The space consists of the School of Public Affairs (SIPA), the Law School, and the East Campus dorm—one of the tallest buildings in the neighborhood. The courtyard between the three buildings is known as Ancel Plaza.
East Campus is linked to the Main Campus by Revson Plaza, a bridge over Amsterdam Avenue built in 1964 that is commonly referred to as the Amsterdam Avenue overpass. The plaza contains some of Columbia’s best sculptures by artists like David Bakalar's Life Force and R. Kees Verkade’s Tightrope Walker, and provides picturesque views up and down Amsterdam Avenue.
East Campus was built around pre-existing buildings still part of Columbia University, including Casa Italiana, Wien Hall, Faculty House and President’s House.
